Bonsai Care

Care for bonsai differs for each season. For best results follow these guidelines for each season:

Spring Care

Spring is the period to start a new bonsai. In this period any pruning and training of last season’s bonsai must be completed. This will give the plant whole planting season to readjust from any modifications set forward by pruning and training.

Summer Care

Bonsais are very delicate plants and Flourish best in places that provide chilly nights, bright days, and rainfall or spray mist almost daily. Most of the North America does not have this type of weather, so particular supplies must be prepared to accommodate for the lack of preferred weather conditions. Extremes in sun, water, and vent are certainly to be prevented. Locate your bonsai on a surface or desk in your backyard where the trees can obtain three to five hours of direct sun a day. The place should be covered, if possible in the afternoon. If the region is under the mercy of drying winds, place a screen around the trees to shield them. Screens also provide the trees with shade. Water with care the whole bonsai — tree and earth — every day. Warning -If you leave out watering even for one day you can damage the tree for good. Make sure your trees are placed where rain can reach them. However, plants should not remain soaked with water for long time.

Fall Care

During this time bonsai must be ready to tolerate the arriving cold. Tree growth must be cut short. To do this, water trees less often to slow the plant growth, and, when the tree growth gradually slows, apply less fertilizer. Do not trim or prune any branches after August. Do not use artificial lights like incandescent filament lights on trees after July 31st. To reduce winter effect on flowering plants apply little amount of 0-10-10 fertilizer.

Winter Care

Main trouble in winter is to shield bonsai against freezing temperatures and dry cold winds. You can leave bonsai out in the cold only to temperatures no lower than tewenty-eight F degrees. This is, however, not the case all through North America, so a cold protection like greenhouse is important. Winter cold hardly ever will cause problem to bonsai that are placed under the protection of a large tree. Be wary, however, drying soil during the freezing time.
